Will Smith released “Summertime” back when I was in high school and to this day, the song triggers memories of my youth; From hanging out at the local pizza place to driving up and down the streets of my hometown looking for friends and (of course) memories of relationships that never panned out (I was not much of a “player” so to speak). One set of lyrics in this song has always stood out to me.
Sittin’ with your friends ’cause y’all reminisce. About the days growin’ up and the first person you kiss. And as I think back, makes me wonder how the smell from a grill could spark up nostalgia!
– Will Smith “SummerTime“
Why you might ask? Well, most of us have probably sat around a fire of some sort or hung out near a grill during our lives (I would say that is a safe assumption). Our memories are “reinforced” by the conversations that occur in these environments. These memories are “confirmed” as others fill in the gaps of stories of the past and at the end of the night, one person ends up remembering the first person they kissed!
So what does this have to do with the latest installment of the Chat Recap? Well the latest BibRave chat was called “Summer Runnin'” (click here for the full list of questions) and focuses on (you guessed it) running in the summer! As I organized my music last night (on the deck next to my grill), while on the chat, I came across this song and I was instantly sent back to my youth…then I returned and continued the chat!
So this week’s chat did indeed focus on running in the summer. I have had mixed luck training in the summer (and heat for that matter) over the past few years but you could say I have some “knowledge” on the subject! Here is my recap of the night.
- Temps up, does anything change? This was an interesting question for me because my answer was “no” nothing really changes but then I started to think that perhaps my routine should change or adapt in summer weather. Last year when blisters became an issue, I switched up to a different type of sock – but I have maintained that sock ever since so that move was not “summer specific.” I need to dig deeper on this question for a future post so check back later on “changes” I might or should make for summer running!
- Importance of sun protection: For me this is a must. I always burn and so sunscreen and I are best friends. End of story!
- Warner weather vs Cooler weather: I am in the latter camp for preference. I run faster and more effectively in the cold. Further, I grew up on the ice playing hockey so “cold” temps and I are best friends!
- Worst Heat I have experienced: The worst conditions I have experienced were in 2 different locales. First, last summer, while at Palm Beach, I did some training for a half marathon in Maine, that was a few weeks away. The temps were in the high 90s and the humidity was off the charts. It was hard to breath with the air so thick! The other “worst”condition that I experienced was at the aforementioned half marathon. That race started off well but by the end, temps were in the high 90s with high humidity and a blazing sun. The last mile featured people down for the count and EMTs scattered about helping people. Thankfully I was not one of them but man, it was tough!
As for other parts of the chat, there was a question on summer gear (which I don’t really have). Also, I don’t really have any “tricks” to beat the heat on runs either.
Overall, it was a great chat with some good people of the running world!
